Design Inspiration-Rhiannon Bulaga

I’ve always been drawn to simplistic design, especially when the content is compelling. If you have content that is interesting, devastating or endearing in and of itself, there is no need to overcomplicate things by using crazy colors or design elements. My belief in this extends my taste in color palettes– I particularly like taupe, pastels and grays. These colors lend themselves to create a backdrop by emphasizing the content around them, which makes the entire piece work cohesively. I’m not sure if that makes sense to anyone but me…Oh well. Here are a few examples of design I like from “Oh Comely” magazine. This magazine is from the UK and focuses on fashion and feminism.

This is sort of out of character for me, as it displays some bright colors, but the natural wood and the geometric neatness of the info in boxes on the right gives it a simplistic look.

I particularly like this design because of the “handwritten” words in the content. It makes it feel more inviting, rather than cold, hard standard type.

Finally, this design blends photography, illustration and information in one clear and concise pages of graphics.
